Jobsite Guard Duties

A construction site is most exposed after the crews go home: fence panels that can be lifted, copper wire and tools in open buildings, equipment parked for the night and fresh deliveries stacked by the gate. Vantage jobsite guards and patrol officers watch over all of it between the last shift and the next morning.

Guards lock and check the gate, walk the fence line, check equipment and materials, look into the open floors of the building and turn away anyone with no business on site. Officers are unarmed and report to your superintendent or project manager.

Gate and Equipment Checks After Hours

At the end of the day, the guard confirms the gate is chained and locked, storage containers and tool cribs are closed and equipment is parked where the superintendent wants it. Each machine can be listed in the post instructions with its location, so a missing lift or loader is noticed on the next round.

Overnight rounds check fence panels, gates, temporary lighting, the material laydown area and each floor of the structure. Officers photograph cut fencing, open doors and moved equipment and note the time for your site log.

Daytime Gate and Delivery Control

During working hours, a gate guard can sign in subcontractors, visitors and inspectors, check deliveries against the day’s schedule and keep the public out of the work zone. That hands the superintendent back time and leaves a record of who was on site each day.

On busy days with crane picks or concrete pours, the gate guard can hold delivery trucks outside until the crew is ready for them, keeping the street and the gate clear.

Patrol Checks for Smaller Projects

Tenant improvements, small residential builds and sites between phases often use mobile patrol visits in place of a full-time guard: several checks a night at varied times, each with photos of the gate, fence and equipment. As the project grows or more material lands on site, an overnight guard can be added.

Our comparison of mobile patrol and an on-site guard helps you weigh the two for your project.

Fire Watch During Hot Work

Welding, torch cutting and roofing work can leave the project needing a fire watch, and so can a sprinkler or alarm system that is offline during construction. Vantage fire watch guards walk the work area on a set route, log each round and stay for the full period your plan calls for. When a hot-work permit lands with little notice, a fire watch post can often begin within 24 hours of your call.

Projects We Cover

Jobsite security fits commercial buildings, apartment and condo projects, tenant improvements, utility staging yards, solar and battery sites and agricultural buildings. Vantage covers projects from San Francisco and the Peninsula through the South Bay to Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Salinas and Monterey.

Post instructions are written at a walkthrough with the superintendent: the gate code, the after-hours call list, the equipment on site and where it sits, and what the guard does on finding a trespasser or damage. Shift notes with photos go to the project manager after each shift. Every officer holds a BSIS guard card and clears a background check before placement, supervisors make quality inspections, and the general contractor receives a certificate of insurance before the first shift.

Construction Security Pricing

Jobsite guards bill at Vantage’s regional $36 to $50 an hour, and a guard who needs a vehicle to cover a large site adds $7 to $12 an hour. Patrol checks bill at $2 to $3 a minute on site with a five-minute minimum per visit. Month-to-month terms let coverage grow or shrink as the project moves through its phases, and the security guard cost calculator gives a monthly range.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Does our jobsite need a guard or a patrol?

Large sites with equipment and materials stored on site usually keep an overnight guard. Smaller projects and sites between phases often do well with several patrol checks a night.

How quickly can coverage start on a new project?

Temporary guards and fire watch can often start within 24 hours of your request, and month-to-month terms let you adjust as phases change.

What happens when the jobsite alarm goes off?

On an alarm or patrol call-out, an officer is on site within 30 minutes, checks the gate, fence and equipment and adds photos to the shift notes.

Can a guard sign in subcontractors during the day?

Yes. A daytime gate guard logs subcontractors, visitors and deliveries against your schedule and keeps the public out of the work zone.
