Guard Duties at Hotels and Inns

A hotel never closes, but its staff thins out after the evening shift. Vantage guards give the front desk, the guest floors and the grounds a steady, polite presence: watching the lobby, walking the halls, checking doors and amenity areas, and backing up the night team when a guest situation needs a second person.

Officers dress and speak for a hospitality setting. They greet guests, point the way to the elevators or the garage, and keep the same calm tone when they ask a non-guest to leave the lobby or a loud room to quiet down.

Lobby and Night Audit Hours

Between midnight and morning, a single night auditor often runs the desk alone. A Vantage guard can hold the lobby through those hours: watching the entrance, making sure late arrivals head to the desk, keeping an eye on the luggage room and business center, and standing close when the auditor handles a difficult check-in or a dispute over a charge.

Where the hotel locks its doors overnight and uses key-card entry, the guard confirms the doors close behind each guest, watches for people slipping in behind them and walks the ground floor every hour.

Guest Floors, Pool and Fitness Areas

Hallway rounds follow a set route through each guest floor, the stairwells, ice and vending rooms and service corridors. Officers note propped doors, trays left in the hall and anyone wandering floors without a key, and they answer the front desk’s calls about a noise complaint or a guest who asks for help.

Pools, hot tubs and fitness rooms close at a posted hour. The guard clears and locks them at closing, checks the gates and fence, and records anyone found inside after hours. Rooftop decks and courtyards get the same treatment.

Parking, Loading and Exterior Rounds

Hotel lots and garages attract car break-ins and people looking for a place to sleep. Exterior rounds cover the parking areas, the valet stand after it closes, the loading dock, trash enclosures and the building perimeter, with photos of damage and open doors in the shift notes. Properties with large lots or several buildings often add mobile patrol visits between the on-site guard’s rounds.

Weddings, Conferences and Event Nights

Ballroom weddings, conferences and holiday parties bring crowds of outside guests into the building at once. Event guards can check names at a private entrance, keep wedding guests out of meeting areas, watch gift tables and coat rooms, and help the banquet staff close the room at the end of the night. Our event security planning guide walks through roles and staffing for larger events, and the event security page covers the service in detail.

Along the coast in Santa Cruz and Monterey, summer weekends and holiday periods fill properties, and month-to-month terms let a hotel add guard hours for those weeks only.

Post Instructions and Reports

Vantage writes post instructions with your general manager or security lead: the lobby post, round routes, amenity closing times, the steps for a guest incident, who the guard calls on each shift and how to handle a guest who refuses to leave. A free on-site security review comes with any guard quote, and our post orders checklist shows what the instructions usually cover.

Shift notes record every round, incident and guest request with times and photos, and each new shift reads them before it starts. Officers on your property carry BSIS guard cards and pass a background check before their first night, a supervisor stops by each post for quality inspections, and hotel management gets a certificate of insurance before coverage begins.

Hotel Security Pricing

Hotel guards bill by the guard-hour inside Vantage’s regional $36 to $50 an hour range, with San Francisco toward the top of it. A common setup is one guard from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven nights a week, with extra hours booked for event nights and busy weekends. The security guard rates guide explains what moves a quote up or down.

A few useful answers

Common questions

Can a guard stay with our night auditor overnight?

Yes. A night post from late evening to morning is the most common hotel setup, with the guard holding the lobby and walking the floors between check-ins.

Will your officers handle noise complaints?

Yes. When the front desk calls, the guard goes to the floor, asks the guests politely to lower the noise and records the visit in the shift notes.

Can we book guards just for weddings and conferences?

Yes. Event guards can be booked for a single night or a full conference, alone or alongside your regular overnight post.

How do your guards fit a hospitality setting?

Officers greet guests, give directions and keep a calm, courteous tone, so they add to the guest experience instead of distracting from it.

Do the rounds cover parking and the pool too?

Yes. Exterior rounds include lots, garages, the loading dock and the pool area, which the guard clears and locks at closing.
